Fiber Artist - Kelly Makara
Kelly Makara was born and
raised on a small farm in Dutchess County, New York. She learned to sew and
quilt from her great aunt at a very early age and has continued working with
fiber ever since. "Weaving provides many creative opportunities for me and
combines my love for art and fiber. Each piece is an expression of the creative
passion that is inside of me." says Kelly.
She currently weaves the majority of her work on
a loom that is an AVL 16 harness production dobby loom. The dobby is a device that
she uses to set the pattern that she is weaving. This loom has a weaving width of 60"
and is equipped with a fly shuttle. On most looms, the weaver uses their hands
to pass the shuttle from one side to the other. The fly shuttle is a mechanical
device that enables me to easily pass the weaving shuttle through a wide width.
She then creates scarves, shawls, blankets, purses and more.
She also hand dyes silk scarves in
an array of colors.
