"When one is involved in the process of creating, the literal subject matter of the piece seems to disappear into abstract forms, lines and relationships. The artist becomes intrigued by linear, spatial and color affiliations, the play of light and textural contrasts. The literal is left behind as one becomes absorbed in the process of creating. It is not the picture of an apple or pear but the recording of light, shadow and texture. One is sometimes jolted when the literal is expressed."

"Many of my drawings have to do with the sensuous forms found in nature; the visceral, vivid colors and textures and the effect light has on them. Travel, outdoor farmers' markets and early 19th century botanicals poke at me and inspire. Humor and just plain whimsy have a place on the page as well.”

“My three dimensional work employs both humor and pathos. Some pieces are done solely for the joy of a smile. At other times, I use humor to attract the viewer so I can tell my story and articulate my reaction to the world and its social and cultural injustices. When viewed casually, there may be an initial humorous response, but there is always a deeper emotion beneath for those who seek it. Contemplation of the piece by the viewer exposes its true intent.”

Anthony Volpe is a visual artist working primarily in pencil. Tony lives in the Lower Hudson Valley where he pursues his art full time. He holds a BS and MS in Art Education with postgraduate work at NYU, the Palazzo Grazzi and Segno Graphico in Venice and art history studies in Florence and Urbino. As contributing editor to The Magazine Cucina Italiana, his botanical drawings were featured in site-specific regional articles of Italy. His work has been exhibited in several one man and group shows both here and in Italy and is in collections in the US, Italy and the UK. Several nationally known celebrity chefs and restaurateurs, Lidia Bastianich, Jacques Pepin among others, collect his work as well. His work was recently seen at the Dorsky Museum in New Paltz, NY.
