Jewelry - Julie Siegmund
Earrings and Necklaces
Traveling to India in 1990, meeting an amazing Israeli designer in 1994 and falling in love with 19th-century steel-cut seed beads from France in 1996 inspired Julie to begin her own line of jewelry.
She loves searching for unusual and original beads and creating wearable art for women of all ages and styles. She uses unusual vintage glass from Japan and Western Germany, French seed beads from the 1890s, hand-blown glass from Murano, Italy and hand lamp-worked glass made by women in California.
The sources of her materials are vitally important. For example, her lamp-work comes exclusively from California. A Chinese-American friend designs the beads. When her company became so successful that she could not manufacture everything herself, she chose not to send the work back to China. Over the past eleven years, she has instead trained more than thirty American women living in California to do the work. She pays attention to the environmental controls around glass-making, and she provides them with decent wages and health insurance. She creates the finest craftswomanship and takes care of her staff and the environment.
