Rafael died in December2016, after a struggle with cancer. We lost not only a unique photographic talent but more importantly a brilliant, funny, kind man. We first showed Rafael in 2014, and RiverWinds featured him in his first solo show in 2015. We always looked forward to see the new work he would bring us – each photo was colorful, dramatic, and meticulously shot and printed.
Originally from New York City, Rafael's background is rooted in the sciences; specifically astrophysics which he studied at Columbia University. In the early eighties Rafael became involved in the emerging computer industry of which he has been a part ever since. He's held IT management positions at Xerox, Kodak, Sun Micro Systems and helped implement the IT infrastructures for many of the largest news and magazine publishers in NYC including The New York Times, The NY Post, The New York Daily News, Time/Life Magazine, People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, among others.
However, Rafael's common thread throughout his life, has been his passion for photography. His most recent work focused on New York City’s emerging architectural landscape, offering a unique perspective on its geometric patterns.
Rafael said, "I’d like to say I don’t photograph things, but rather how they make me feel. Technically, I strive for the perfect photo without compromising the all-important mood I am trying to convey. In the end, it’s an expression of how I see the world, and perhaps, a very good way to get to know me." Using HDR (high-dynamic-range) he enhances the drama, the mood.
His photographs of the 43rd Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House at the Arthur Sachs Mansion in New York City featuring top Interior Decorators and Designers appeared in Architectural Digest, Forbes Magazine, DuJour, the Washington Post, House Beautiful among others. His photographs have also been in Hudson Valley Magazine: "Best Of Hudson Valley 2014" - The Falcon, Marlboro NY and the AOL City Guide: "Best Burger in NYC" - New York Burger Co. – Food Photography. His photographic assignments also included a Jennifer Lopez shoot with film crew from American Idol and NYC’s Top Interior Designer’s Boat House Bash at the Central Park Loeb Boathouse in NYC.
